Bridging the Technical Divide: Harness Planning Skills

There is often a misconception that a planner's work ends at the planning phase. This session seeks to address that misconception by providing case study examples from planning, engagement, and project management professionals who are able to successfully leverage their skills to bridge the gap between planning phases and other technical transportation disciplines. This session will include a presentation and discussion to help attendees build upon their existing skills and identify new ways to effectively communicate between planning and transportation technical disciplines such as engineering, design, and traffic. This session will include technical and public engagement case studies and highlight lessons learned from transportation projects in Columbus, the Greater Ohio region, and across the United States. Additionally, the session will offer new tools to help planners translate detailed analyses into easily digestible materials for public consumption and understanding. Planning and other technical disciplines can work in harmony to develop more sustainable and equitable communities. Planners who attend this session will be able to identify new ways to use their planning skills to communicate across other disciplines, effectively prepare to translate technical concepts to the public, and strategically deploy a holistic planning approach to address the challenges of the future.
