Healthy Equity in Unlikely Places

The Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission in Dayton has engaged in important work around the idea that "all people, regardless of where they live, should have the resources, be provided with opportunities, and be in an environment that facilitates and supports health and well-being." This session will draw on Health Environment and Built Environment Assessments they have conducted for the region to share how data collection and presentation can illuminate health disparities and provide a foundation for talking about health equity in communities that aren't accustomed to doing so. Speakers will share interesting--and in some cases surprising--findings and discuss how such efforts can be used to engage communities in discussions around social determinants of health and how health outcomes can be improved. Additionally, speakers will share examples of communities in which health equity was integrated into planning processes in impactful ways. The examples will focus on types of communities that are not often considered likely candidates for a focus on health equity--rural villages, bedroom suburbs and mid-sized legacy cities. In sum, this session will focus on methods for bringing health equity into the conversation with unlikely groups, and working collaboratively with them to influence health outcomes.
